The Night Visions Anthology Series

First published by Dark Harvest in 1984, Night Visions invited horror authors to serve as editors for each edition showcasing three unique authors per volume. For Volumes 1-9, each edition was titled after one of the stories or novellas presented within. While some authors contributed as many as 6 or more short stories, others presented a single novella to two or three novelettes. For most editions, the stories were new and being published for the first time in Night Visions.

Valuable alone for the short essays presented by the guest editors highlighting their editorial sensibilties and presenting personal stories and reflections of the authors showcased, the quality of this series ran a high bar. While individual editors naturally gravitated toward/made a defense of what appeals to them (Douglas Winters presenting Stephen King, for whom he’s written two full book-length studies on), Night Visions contained an excellent blend of established writers and up-and-comers who were cementing their legacies at the time.
